Annie Besant was the author of The Ancient Wisdom which introduced yoga to the West. She had seen an Indian Yogi during a visit to North India and she introduced wonder-working miracles to Annie's London audience. Sister Nivedita was one of the first Westerners to study with the great sage Swami Vivekananda, who taught her that "Yoga is not a philosophy, Yoga is the God-consciousness." She became his disciple and devoted her life to spreading his message. She also studied with other Hindu Gurus including Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who described Sister Nivedita as "his beloved friend." She died on 23rd August 1920 in Calcutta.
